InSync: When God Says 'GO,' Don't Say 'NO'

InSync 4

When God Says GO, Don't Say NO
by Andy Borero

The past blog entries have been focused on the third aspect of God: the Holy Spirit. We’ve learned that the Spirit is not a mere fog or ghost that haunts us. He serves as our guide, God in the Spirit, our Spiritual mentor who helps us in our everyday life.  We’ve also learned the importance of keeping in step with the Spirit in order to be assured of straightforward life.

Now that we’re informed of the real purpose of the Holy Spirit, it’s about time that we respond.

Imagine a full to the brim glass of mango shake. Obviously, the glass is full and doesn’t need a refill for another five minutes. But what if your friend suddenly decides to pour another pitcher into the glass? It’s a no-brainer: the glass will overflow. The excess shake will spill from the glass unto the table cloth.

In the same way, when you’re filled with the Holy Spirit, there’s this feeling that you just can’t contain it and you gotta share it with someone else. SERVICE of others is the response that we’re looking at.

If you were asked “What gift would you like most in the world?” what would be your response?

An IPhone 5C?

Your crush in a box with matching ribbons?

The cutest puppy that makes you wanna squish it?

This blog entry plans on discussing a different type of gift. It’s not a tangible, material type of gift. The gift we’re talking about is the type that only our God can give and they’re called SPIRITUAL GIFTS.

So, what are they supposed to be?

Spiritual Gifts are considered vital when it comes to serving God in the most effective manner. Their purpose is to serve others but sometimes, our hesitation in serving gets in the way. When we’re asked to do something that requires a step of faith, we find ourselves backing away and the word NO just screams aloud in our heads.

Today, it’s about time to step it up a notch.

When God says GO, don’t say NO.

I. What are Spiritual Gifts?

These are divine abilities given by distributed by the Holy Spirit to every believer, according to God’s design and for the common good of every one.

There are 4 important highlights about them:

- It is given to every believer

A spiritual gift is given to each of us as a means of helping the entire church
1 Corinthians 12:7

The moment we genuinely surrendered our lives to Christ, God bestowed upon us these spiritual gifts to be used in service of His church. It’s good to know that no one is exempted from being given these gifts because it’s an automatic occurrence once we give ourselves to Jesus.

- It is determined by God

It is the one and only Holy Spirit who distributes these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have
1 Corinthians 12:11

We can’t choose our gifts. God is the one who determines this, based on His grace and purpose. Therefore, we have no right to demand the gift we want from God. He is God after all and He knows what’s best.

- It is to be used to serve others

As 1 Corinthians 12:7 says, the gifts we have are to be used in service of others. They cannot satisfy selfish motives and self-seeking ambitions. When we serve in ministries, we should always aim for the betterment of our fellowmen first before our own wants.

- It’s not something we can brag about

The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up only one body. So it is with the body of the Christ
1 Corinthians 12:12

One can never claim he has a superior gift compared to the others. There’s no such thing as a least important gift nor is there a more important gift. Every function in the ministry is VITAL. There should be humility when we serve.

II. What is the fruit of the Holy Spirit?

We should use our Spiritual Gifts as means for showing love to others. However, this is an impossible task on our own cause let’s face it: we are selfish beings. By default, we don’t want to share our candy. We want all the attention to ourselves. That’s why it’s important to be aware of the Holy Spirit and it’s fruit.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Galatians 5:22-23

We can’t produce this Fruit by ourselves. Nope, we need the aid of a supernatural being.

Notice also that the Bible used the word FRUIT instead of FRUITS. No, it’s not a grammatical error. All the nine fruits are boiled down into one big fruit. It’s impossible to have all the other eight fruits when we don’t have LOVE.

The fruit can be compared to GRAPES. They are all connected to one vine. If one is growing, so will the others.

What’s the difference between the fruit and the gifts?

Fruit – refers to the character of a Christian, which is an inward evidence of the Holy Spirit working in him.
Gift – refers to the service of a Christian, which is an outward result of the inner transformation.

You might be asking: “Is there a difference between spiritual gifts and talent?”

There are times when we mistaken our talents such as singing, dancing, acting, etc. for spiritual gifts. Here’s what differs one from the other:

Talents
-These are abilities given at birth.
-These are already possessed, whether or not you have a relationship with Christ.
-These are merely used for performances.

Spiritual Gifts
-These are abilities given at spiritual birth.
-These can only be possessed once a person genuinely starts a relationship with Christ.
-These are used for the common good.

There are numerous types of spiritual gifts which can be bestowed on you upon your acceptance of Christ. Wanna know them all?

Faith
This is the ability to envision what needs to be done, and to trust God to accomplish it despite its impossibility to most people.

Administration
This is the ability to give direction and make decisions on behalf of others that result in efficient operation and accomplishment of goals. This includes the ability to organize people, things, information, finances, etc.

Helps
This is the ability to joyfully work alongside another and help that person complete the task God has given them.

Hospitality
This is the ability to welcome strangers and entertain guests, with great joy and kindness so that they become friends.

Teaching
This is the ability to understand and communicate biblical truth in a clear and relevant manner, so that there is understanding and application.

Exhortation
This is the ability to motivate, encourage, and console others, so they mature in their walk with Jesus.

Wisdom
This is the ability to have insight into people and situations, which is not obvious to an average person.

Now that we know the definition of the spiritual gifts, it’s about time we figure out how we could discover them on our own.

First step would be to PRAY. Let the Lord show you where you belong.

Second step would be to KNOW WHERE YOUR PASSION LIES.

Third step: GET FEEDBACK FROM FELLOW CHRISTIANS. See what they think!

Final step: ASSESS YOURSELF. Is this where God really wants you to be?

Serving others should be considered as an honor. It’s amazing to be a channel of God’s goodess. In a ministry, we are God’s instruments and it should feel great that He is using us to fulfil His work. It’s also an opportunity to experience God when we are faced with challenges when we serve. Temptations are always there and it’s good to know that the Lord has our back when we choose to fight off Satan and keep on fixing our eyes on Him.

Finally, it’s a blessing to witness changed lives. Our service is worth it when a soul comes to the Good Lord. All that hard work- priceless!

Be eager in discovering your Spiritual Gifts, and after which, ask God to give you the desire to serve. Intentionally pray about where you can serve, seek His Word, and listen to His voice, because when God says “Go,” you cannot say “No.”

InSync: Keep in Step!

InSync 3

Keep in Step!
by Daniel Carandang

The world is always out to dare us.

There's just too much of the hustling and the bustling everywhere that we are being prodded to do something in order to prove ourselves.

To prove what we're made of.

If we're going to be honest, it's quite hard being a Christian in a world such as ours. We keep on forgetting that we are set apart and we should not be one with this world because we are in Christ. Paul reminds us in Galatians 4:4-7:

But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law.God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children.[a] And because we[b] are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.”[c] Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child.[d] And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.

We shouldn't be living for ourselves. As Children of God, we should set our priorities straight. Do things out of love for Him rather than for His love.

But- reality check:

We experience temptations everyday. Without fail.

We can't help but peek at our neighbor's paper during exams or talk about the latest gossip in school or just plainly think lustfully about this pretty girl.

Our sinful nature causes us to fail God.

But we shouldn't lose hope!

With proper determination, we should aim for the possible: not sinless, but to sin LESS every day. God wants us to overcome our sinful natures with the help of the Holy Spirit.

16 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.
Galatians 5:16

The Holy Spirit guides us with the rights and wrongs of life. It's up to us if we're going to take heed of what He says or choose to play deaf.

13 For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.
Galatians 5:13

We were called for FREEDOM, friends. Freedom to live this life to the full. But Paul reminds us to be wise in using this freedom. We have this tendency to abuse the freedom we are given by partying till the end of the world, drinking to our hearts' contents and just living life as we want it to be.

No, guys!

We shouldn't be stuck in the sinful nature because of our wrong image of freedom. Satan uses this wrong view and persuades us to do the exact opposite of what God wants.

17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.
Galatians 5:17

There are two forces constantly at battle within us: sinful nature vs. the Holy Spirit.

We're often caught in the middle of these two when we're faced with temptations.

For example, the usual question during exams: TO CHEAT OR NOT TO CHEAT?

If you did not study for the exam because you spent the hours yesterday on computer games or unlimited social networking, you know you're facing a big fat zero. But since you don't want that, you have this option to cheat. That's what your sinful nature prods you to do.

But, if you accepted Christ, this isn't easy.

There's this heaviness inside, the feeling that just won't go away, consistently reminding you of how wrong cheating is. There's an inward struggle.

That's the Holy Spirit reminding you.

Ever heard of the virus named TAXOPLASMA?

Taxoplasma is a virus found in the bowel wastes of cats.

You see, the cat's favorite prey, mice, can have this tendency to eat the cat's poop containing the virus. The taxoplasma then affects the brain of the mouse causing the part responsible for fear to manufacture feelings of pleasure instead. So, the mouse, who is naturally afraid of cats, falls in love with their predators.

And when that happens,

They gain a one-way ticket towards death.

The same applies to sin. SIN can twist our heads if we entertain it. We are drawn towards something we should hate. Sin overhauls itself, making itself look pleasurable to us. We get deceived! When we allow ourselves to be deceived, we're too late and we fall towards the consequences.

As long as we are alive, Satan will be always out to get us. We will continue to struggle with our sinful nature, unless we learn to fight.

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Galatians 5:16 (NIV)

WALK in the original text means to LIVE.

Live in the Spirit!

Life is like a roller coaster: Unpredictable and unstable. There's tons of ups and downs. Sometimes you're high in the faith, happy and content, other times you're discouraged and you lose hope in God. Life can be happy yet at the same time, it can also break your heart.

The Holy Spirit should serve as our spiritual GPS, meant to guide us towards the RIGHT DIRECTION.

When life get's tough, it's time to just pause and practice SPIRITUAL BREATHING.

How does one breathe spiritually?

EXHALE

- acknowledge your sins
- acknowledge the fact that it's only God who could forgive you through the power of the Cross
- repent; promise to never do that sin again

INHALE

- surrender the control of your life to the Holy Spirit

There are also Christians who know a lot about God, the Bible and the Holy Spirit. Unfortunately, all they know is just stuck in their heads but no FRUIT or results. Their life does not bear any evidence of the Holy Spirit's guidance. It's just plain head knowledge.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Galatians 5:22-23

A life lead by the Holy Spirit showcases the fruit of its labor as written above by Paul.

Keeping in step with the Spirit should be a way of life. If we are in Him, then we walk by His Spirit.

24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
Galatians 5:24-25

Don't miss out on what God has to offer! Keep in step!

In Sync: More than Just A Nebulous Substance (The Holy Spirit)

In Sync 1

More than Just A Nebulous Substance: The Holy Spirit
by Daniel Carandang

When you hear the term holy spirit, what comes to mind?

Foggy thing that comes out of nowhere?

Unknown nebulous substance?

Smoke?

What is this Holy Spirit?

Before we discuss what he is (yes friends, it's not an IT. Will explain further later), we should clarify what the Holy Spirit is NOT:

- The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force. It's no way similar to the Force so famously used in the movie Star Wars. It is simply not just an IT.

So what is the Holy Spirit?

1. He is a PERSON

This may come across as odd but that's the truth. The Holy Spirit is a PERSON. What's the proof that this Spirit is as living as any 2-legged person?

29 The Holy Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and walk along beside the carriage.”
Acts 8:29

A plant can't speak. Animals make sounds but they can't utter words. People do. The Holy Spirit SPEAKS, therefore, he is a person. Since he is able to speak, it's good to say that he also TEACHES.

26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.
John 14:26

The Holy Spirit acts as a teacher to us. He is a personal Jimminy Cricket, so to speak. The Yes' and No's of life are in his hands and it's up to us if we will heed the advice.

Like any other person who has emotions, the Holy Spirit can also be grieved whenever we do things our way and become so engrossed in living in our little lives.

30 And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own,[a] guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.
Ephesians 4:20

In Matthew 28:19, it is stated that God exists in three persons: The Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit. We have God the Father then Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit whom Christ sent once He ascended towards heaven to serve as our helper until He returns.

The story of Ananias in Acts 5 reiterates the oneness of the trinity. Ananias basically was overcome by greed when he decided to prioritize himself over the church by giving what was left from the money he decided to pocket for himself. Eventually, Peter found out:

Then Peter said, “Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself. The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren’t lying to us but to God!”
Acts 5:3-4

Lied to the Holy Spirit = LIED TO GOD.

Ouch.

Now that we know who the Spirit is, it's time to understand our relationship with the third being of God:

- He indwells us

19 Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself,
1 Corinthians 6:19

If you belong to Christ, He is in you. Our bodies our not ours but they were made for Christ to dwell in us.

So what?

But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)
Romans 8:9

Because of Adam and Eve's fall, we are all sinners. We fall short of God's glory because we are slaves to sin. But then, we are reminded of Christ's sacrifice on the cross and if we put our faith in Him, we are bit by bit cleansed of the sinful nature. We then allow the new nature to take over us.

If you accepted Christ, you belong to God.

Let's take a look at 1 Corinthians 6:18-19:

18 Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body. 19 Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself,

Corinth was basically the Vegas of Paul's time. What happens in Corinth, stays in Corinth. Paul reminds the people to stay away from the reigning sexual immorality in the city. He points out the fact that they do not own their bodies, rather God does.

Respect your body, the temple of the Holy Spirit!

- He leads us

Juniors and seniors in high school all have to undergo the COCC or CAT experience. One of the exercises usually involves all the students marching in synchronize according to the orders of the leader. Should you not follow orders and go ahead of the rest, well, say hello to burning push-ups.

The Holy Spirit acts us our spiritual leader in this life.

Paul says so in Galatians 5:16-17:

16 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. 17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.

Have you experienced this heavy feeling whenever you're about to do or actually doing something against God's will? Like when you're about to steal a cookie from the jar, or when you're about to sneak out with friends or basically, just out for something bad- there's this nagging feeling inside of you, something that's screaming NO!

When you are in Christ and you have this feeling, it's the Holy Spirit nudging you. Because of sin, life can get messy. It's a good thing that the Holy Spirit keeps on reminding on us on what to do and what not to do. However, if we keep on ignoring his reminders, we tend to develop calloused-hearts: hearts so numb to sin that we don't listen to the Spirit anymore.

25 Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.
Galatians 5:25

Choose to yield, dear brothers and sisters! Don't let sin take over you! Listen to what the Spirit has to say.

- He comes alongside us

Sometimes, life can be just painful.

Your so-called friends start talking behind your back. You got rejected by this girl you really like. Your parents are always quarreling.

Scenarios that make you ask: "What is life?"

Sometimes, you just feel alone with all these problems.

But in reality, you're not.

16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate,[a] who will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.[b]
John 14:16-17

The back story of the verse above is this was the time Jesus was about to be crucified. Notice the word ADVOCATE. Advocate in Greek is PARAKLETOS. It's actually a compound noun composed of two words: para which means beside and kletos which means to call.

Combined = CALLED TO BE BESIDE US.

The Holy Spirit is the number one cheerleader in our lives. He's always there, encouraging us and beside us. You are never alone. There's no reason to turn to alcohol or drugs just to be satisfied. Come to the Holy Spirit when you need encouragement.

Stay in sync with the Holy Spirit and see that Christ has more to offer than the rest of the world!
