The Hero. The Villain. The Girl. : No God, No Peace. Know God, Know Peace.

The Hero. The Villain. The Girl. 4

No God, No Peace. Know God, Know Peace.
by Ptr. Joby Soriano

The story of beauty queen Tracy Lippard is truly a story of good girl gone bad. What motivated the pretty face to carry a gun, arm herself with a hammer and a bottle of lighter fluid set to burn?

REVENGE.

Apparently, Ms. Lippard's ex-boyfriend jilted her at their own wedding and then she found out that he was about to get married to another woman. Consumed with rage, she wanted to kill the man she once loved. She drove to his home and pretended to be caught in a car trouble. She was allowed inside the man's kitchen by the his father-in-law and mother-in-law.

Ms. Lippard attempted to attack the couple but unfortunately for her, the father-in-law worked for a government secret service so he was able to tackle her. With the help of his wife, they were able to take her down. Eventually, the police arrived and Ms. Lippard was arrested.

When asked why she did it, she said:

"I need inner peace."

PEACE.

What is peace to you?

Getting rich with money?

Having lots of vacations?

No trials?

What is PEACE?

Peace in Greek is eiréné, which means to bind together or weave together, just like the strands of a rope. In Hebrew, it is shalom- freedom from trouble.

Life poses several challenges that prove how peace is very difficult to achieve. Trials such as overload of school works, tensions in the family and others weigh heavily on our hearts, making it hard for us to experience quietness.

Where can we find peace in a world that's just filled with too much shenanigans?

Jesus answers:

27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
John 14:27

Real peace is not found in the glimmer of money or the glamour of material things, it's with God.

Just like the strands of the rope, we have to be woven together with Him if we desire to find peace. If we want to experience assurance and certainty, we should dig deeper in His Word.

When life challenges us with trials, do we give up easily? Once we're faced with that trial, are we the first to run away from it or are we the last to withstand and eventually pass through?

Find your inner peace with God to make it through.

We should follow the steps of Jesus.

Jesus was the Son of God. He was God in the flesh, therefore He knew what it was like to be human and he too searched for peace.

Amazingly, He had peace wherever He went.

Jesus had peace during Satan's tempting (Matthew 4:1-11)
He had peace during a storm (Luke 8:22-25)
He had peace when he was being interrogated by Pilate (John 18:33-38)
He had peace when he was nailed on the cross (Luke 23:34)

And as He said in John 14:27, Jesus offers His peace to us. In fact, PEACE is a fruit of the Holy Spirit as said in Galatians 5:22-23. But keep in mind that the peace Jesus has for us is unlike any other.

In verse 27, Jesus describes His version of peace as the type that wasn't similar to what the world offers to us. Today, there are various organizations rallying for peace. Peace treaties, peace cors, peace talks, all types of peace.

The world's peace is not genuine and it will never be. When we say cease fire, it doesn't mean the war has stopped. It's still there, only hidden under a rug until it can resume. Someday, another conflict will rise and the exchange of fire will resume.

On the other side, God's peace is true forgiveness. The fire will not only cease momentarily, it will cease forever.

The world's peace is temporal and artificial. It tells us that in order to find peace after every failed relationship, we should get drunk and party harder than we have in our lives. Drugs is the answer should we ask for a calming effect.

But God's peace is much more than that. His peace is not over once we wake up and suffer from a serious hang over. It reaches deep down in the dark pit where we find ourselves in. Unlike booze and drugs that just worsen our condition, God's peace helps us genuinely move on step by step.

How can we receive this peace from the Lord?

Simple.

All it takes is the 3 R's.

RECEIVE. RELEASE. RELY.

1. Receive

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we[a] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ
Romans 5:1

It always comes to a choice. We have the option to reject or to receive the peace Christ offers to us. If we have been searching forever for the peace that we need, we can always run to Jesus because He offers it to us so wholeheartedly as He says so in John 16:33:

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

In this world, there is nothing but trouble. We think we're satisfied with the things offered by this world but in reality, we remain unstable. If we want genuine peace in our hearts, we have to let go and to receive the peace Jesus offers us.

2. Release

Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you
1 Peter 5:7

When we receive the peace of Jesus, we shouldn't be super stressed out with all the worries our trials bring us. Normally, when we're faced with situations that test our faith (e.g. school works that just make your head ache, unreasonable people, etc.), we become so clouded with worry and our fears that our mind can't come up with the proper response.

But if you have God's peace, don't fret!

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7

Sometimes, you just have to pause and take a deep breath. Worrying won't help us resolve our problems. Rather than be stressed out and kill ourselves and go overboard, we should just bow your head and say a prayer. Be still and know that He is God. He will carry us through our trials, that we can be assured of.

Call out to Him because He hears you.

3. Rely

After we release our prayers to God, we wait. We don't turn around or and squiggle. We await His answer. We need to rest and fall back into the arms of God.

There was a man who was driving his truck by the road when he spotted an old man who was walking down the road carrying a sack of potatoes. As a sign of goodwill, he stopped his truck and went down to offer the old man a ride. The old man agreed and he rode at the back of the truck. The man continued to drive and he took a look at the old man.

He was surprised to see that the old man was still carrying the sack of potatoes, despite the fact that he could've set it down the moment he got on the truck.

Sometimes, we could be just like that old man. God offers to carry our burdens but we still cling unto them. We refuse to allow God to take over. We still want to hold unto our sack of potatoes.

Know that God is always in control.

You will keep in perfect peace
those whose minds are steadfast,
because they trust you.
Isaiah 26:3

Think about God. Faced with the impossible? You have only two choices: to have fear or to have faith. According to Martin Luther, faith sees the invisible, believes in the incredible, and receives the impossible. Rely on His promises and don't be swayed by fear. Fear paralyzes peace. Read Isaiah 43:2 and be comforted.

God didn't promise that He keep us away from life's problems but He does promise that He will see us through it and that He will be with us.

Know God more and you will know what genuine peace is about :)

No God, No peace.

But know God, you will know PEACE! :>

The Hero. The Villain. The Girl. : The Deal With Relationships

The Hero. The Villain. The Girl. 3

The Deal with Relationships (The Girl)
By Ptr. Marty Ocaya

Behind ever superhero is a girl that serves as his inspiration whenever he saves the world.

For Superman (a.k.a Clark Kent), it's Lois Lane.

Lois Lane first encountered the dashing hero in a Kyrptonian scout spaceship in the Arctic. It was during this time that she was rescued by Superman and she discovered his inhuman abilities. This lead to her writing about the experience but was rejected by her editor, forcing her to hunt down Clark for more information to put in her expose. However, as the time passes, Lois finds herself falling for our mysterious protagonist. She fell...hook, line, sinker.

Lois represents the romance in the film Man of Steel. She is the apple of the hero's eyes, the reason why he can go on and save the world.

Which leads us to the topic of this blog- RELATIONSHIPS.

Yes, relationships.

When the talk is about love lives, people begin to perk up because let's face it, it's one of the most interesting topics for most of us.

Relationships are by far one of the most problematic yet most important aspects of our lives. Problematic, why? Surely, some of us have experienced the 'Di makatulog sa gabi sa kaiisip (Cannot sleep due to thinking too much)' or the cannot-eat-because-I'm-lovesick-baby phenomena. When things don't go well in our love life (or crush life for some of us), we're highly distracted.

But to be fair, it can also give us our daily bits of inspiration. Your crush said 'Hi' = HAPPY DAY.

All of us would like to have healthy and happy relationships.

The key to such ideal relationship is to have a HEALTHY HEART. Not one free from cholesterol...a heart that is free from distractions, possesses pure intentions and so forth.

How's your heart?

Jeremiah 17:9 describes the true nature of our hearts:

The heart s deceitful above all things
and beyond cure
Who can understand it?

Our heart is the most deceitful of all our organs. Not only that, it's also one of the most complicated of them all. Who can understand it? Remember lines such as "I love him but I don't" or "I hate that I love you so"? COMPLICATED! We can't understand what our heart really wants. If we keep on listening to it, we'll go insane trying to decipher it.

Having a healthy heart is vital should we desire to have a healthy relationship.

How can we manage our hearts then?

1. Manage your emotions

Don't be the type that easily falls for a person just because of their looks. Just because he has a cleft chin, a twirl in his hair and 10-pack abs, that doesn't mean he's automatically the ONE! Our emotions can easily sway us from thinking rationally. Keep them in place and know when to utilize them properly.

- Appreciate More. Expect Less.

If we expect a lot from people, we all eventually end up being disappointed in them. If you keep on expecting that your crush actually likes you but apparently he/she doesn't, you will most likely have another rotten day at school and be disappointed for most of the time. Rather than posses a high level of expectations, learn to appreciate people for what they are. Appreciate that you are friends with the person you admire rather than expect, expect, expect and watch them burn right in front of your eyes.

- Don't allow your emotions to dictate your decisions

When we're emotionally high or low, we should know better than to make decisions. Our emotions can blind us from thinking logically. We are dictated by what we feel, especially when they're running very high. You'll say yes to this guy because you're so flattered that he likes you and he's the cutest guy in school but you've forgotten to process the fact that he disobeys his mom a lot and disrespects his older sister often. You'll go after this girl because you know that she likes you back but you're blinded with these, disregarding the fact that she's a very demanding sort of person.

Don't make decisions when your emotions are in high levels. You might as well regret the consequences in the end.

- Timing ins important so learn to wait

WAITING is of the essence. When we wait, it shows that we trust God's judgement. We're not saying yes immediately to proposals of love because we're waiting upon God's answer.

Why wait? For students, it's highly advised to prioritize other matters such as God, family and academics over romantic relationships because as of the moment, those are our responsibilities. If we rush things, sometimes the outcomes are not what we exactly want.

- Listen to your mind

The world keeps on telling you to listen to your heart. As the prophet Jeremiah stated, the heart is DECEITFUL so why base all your decisions in it? Use your head! The mind is our voice of reason. We should learn to balance reason and heart. Our heart has the tendency to block our minds. Don't let it rule you out! Think logically before you dive into an act you might as well regret.

2. Take your responsibilities seriously!

RESPONSIBILITY is everywhere. Each stage in our life carries a responsibility we should learn to fulfil. For example, at this age, the youth generation, our responsibility is not only to be a daughter/son or a brother/sister to our siblings but also to be students, preparing ourselves for the future.

Having a romantic relationship is also a responsibility one chooses to add in his/her list of roles. As much as possible, students are advised to know their priorities, to focus on their studies first because let’s face it, caring for someone is not only rainbows and butterflies, it’s compromise (as Adam Levine sings in She Will Be Loved), it’s a big duty too. If we keep on being irresponsible and let life dictate what we should do or our emotions to take over, we might end up with harmful consequences.

Teenage pregnancies are caused by kids who were irresponsible and unmindful of the possible effects of their actions.

3. Save sex for marriage

Contrary to popular belief that God hates sex, the truth is God made sex and He is a big supporter of it- if it is in the context of marriage.  Sex is His gift to couples who were brought together and married under His Word.

Some say that sex is an expression of love. If this is done before marriage, that’s not love. That’s just lust. LUST has devastating consequences that come along with it if it is allowed to overrule a life. Consider this: why are most gender confusion cases occurring among teens (meaning they don’t know if they’re still straight or gay) who have had family members abuse them sexually? Why is it harder to admit past sexual mistakes compared to other mistakes such as gambling, drinking and stealing? Why are affairs outside of marriages one of the main reasons behind broken families?

Healing from sexual mistakes takes a longer time.

Lust, when overused and mistaken for love, can bear consequences that will make us wish we had never done so in the first place. SEX is supposed to be a wonderful gift from God that we should save till we’re married and share it with our future husband/ wife.

Let’s go back to Jeremiah 17:9

Though we know that our hearts our deceitful, we still choose to follow its beatings. FOLLOW YOU HEART- that’s what the world tells us. Despite the fact that some of us are already re-evaluating the sense of the relationship we have or experiencing difficulties, we still tell ourselves “I’ll make it work!” You still believe that you can solve whatever is happening.

There was one such woman who became a victim of her wrong mindset with regards to relationships. Her story can be found in John 8.

The woman never thought that she would be one day be caught for her sin. During those days, adultery was one of the most spiteful offenses anyone can commit, especially if the suspect was a woman. She didn't take heed of this warning and instead, thought that maybe she could make her multiple relationships work. Unfortunately for her, she was caught by the Pharisees.
Anyone caught in committing adultery was sentenced to be stoned to death. The woman, realizing the heaviness of her mistake, probably became distraught. Too late! she must’ve said to herself. She was finally going to pay the consequences of her sin. The Pharisees brought her in their midst and she found herself being taunted and judged by the holy people.

She had never felt so ashamed in her life.

Her captors called out to a man within the circle.

“Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?”
John 8:4-5

This is it. She was to be sentenced. The woman, who was only seeking love from men, was to die because of her search for love.

The Teacher did not speak but merely crouched on the ground and began to write with his finger. The people were confused with Him and they began to badger Him with the same question.

Finally, He stood up and said:

Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.
John 8:7

The woman awaited the first blow.

When she looked up, she saw her captors slowly walking away.

One by one, they left until it was only her and the Teacher. He stood up and for the first time, the woman found herself staring in the eyes of Jesus.

“Woman, where are they has no one condemned you?”

She said, “No one, Lord.”
John 8:11 a

Because she witnessed Him for what He was, the woman submitted herself to the Teacher, to Jesus Christ her Lord and Savior. What He said next must have brought her to tears-

“Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more...”

To the people, she was condemned.

But to the Savior, she was not.

You see, it is only in God can we find the love that we’re searching for. This doesn't mean that we shouldn't dive into relationships when we’re ready, it just means that while we’re still waiting, we should get our source of love from Him and He will provide exactly what we need.

Offer your relationships to God. Ask Him to give you the right ONE at the right place in the right time. Trust that God knows what's best for you. After all, He is God.

If you give Him what you've got, be assured that he'll give you the SUPER that you deserve.

The Hero. The Villain. The Girl. : Why Am I Here?

The Hero. The Villain. The Girl. 2

Why Am I Here? (The Villain)
By Daniel Carandang

Usual superhero movies have three characters that we should never forget. Number one would be the hero, of course. He's the one who always saves the day, possessing powers that we one day dream of having. Let's not forget the damsel in distress that he'll be saving in the middle of the film. She has to be really pretty and in real need to suit our hero.

And lastly, though we hate them to the core but we have to accept the fact that we can't live without them, the villain. Villains are the ones who are always after the heroes necks, adding conflict and spice to the tale.

In the 2013 film Man of Steel, General Zod fulfills the spicy villain role.

A little background on our villain: General Zod is the military commander of the Krypton race, which was experiencing imminent destruction due to an unstable core. He found himself in a heated argument with Jor-El who wanted his race to break free from the norm, to experience freedom, which Zod strongly refused to agree to. Jor-El and his wife Lara send their son Kal-El to the planet Earth after infusing his cells with a genetic codex of the entire Kryptonian race. Because of that, Jor-El was killed by Zod. Shortly after that, he was captured yet was able to escape when Krypton exploded.

Afterwards, he made it his mission to find Kal-El in the planet and finish him once and for all.

Killing Kal-El (Clark Kent) seemed to be Zod's greatest purpose. He was so fixated with this mission that he didn't care that he was destroying a number of lives just to achieve his goal. In his head, he believed that he was doing the right thing, empowering him to hunt down the boy who deviated from the norm.

Many people can be like General Zod most of the time.

We think we're living for the right purpose when in fact we are clearly deceived.

Ever asked yourself this question?

WHY AM I HERE?

What are you here for?

In order to uncover that, we should first take a look at Ecclesiastes 1:1-18.

Ecclesiastes can be linked to the word teacher or someone teaching to a group. The book was written by Solomon, the wisest known person in the Bible.

The second verse of the chapter actually goes like this:

"Meaningless! Meaningless!" says the Teacher
"Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless!"

If you read the whole chapter, the word MEANINGLESS is used more than once or twice. Riches, relationships, wisdom- all were dubbed as MEANINGLESS. It's ironic because the writer of this book had all of those listed above yet he considers all of them as meaningless. In Solomon's point-of-view, living for such things is pointless...despite the fact that he had it all, he knew that if he based his life on such things, he would go nowhere.

When we see a gravestone, we usually spot the date of birth and death engraved on it.

1908 - 1989

The dash in the middle represents the life that we lived. It also reflects how SHORT life can be. Which is why we want to make the most of our lives because we know that we can die any day.

Here are some views on why we should live:

1. Moral Excellence

Everyone wants to be good one way or another. The call for good change has been widespread nowadays. There are plenty of demonstrations or events for cleaner environment, movements to end poverty, promote women's rights, etc.

There's noting wrong with living for such. In fact, they're great help to the society. It only becomes a hindrance when we base our existence on the want to do good in order to be recognized and praised by the majority. We do good so that we are remembered by present and future generations.

But what if we don't earn the respect we expect or are remembered forever? After all, verse 11 says:

No one even remembers the former generations,
and even those yet to come
will not be remembered
by those who followed them

NO ONE WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU. If this happens and your life depended on it, you will burn our. You'll get wearisome and ask yourself: "Why am I still doing this?"

2. Happiness and pleasure

You exist just to have fun. The concept of YOLO (You Only Live Once) is your mantra. Since you only have one life and one shot at it, might as well make the best of it by partying while you can. Get drunk and high all night for tomorrow, you die.

But friends, the fun provided by such is fleeting. Yes, you are young and you have every right to enjoy but enjoying in such a way isn't exactly the best idea ever.

Remember your Creator
in the days of your youth
before the days of trouble come
and the years approach when you will say
"I find no pleasure in them-"
Ecclesiastes 12:1

Remember the One who made you. You'll eventually grow tired of partying then you'll live out the consequences of your mistake in your latter years and ask yourself: "Why did I waste my time on that?"

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
John 1:1-3

In the verse, the latin word LOGOS is apparent in the form of the Word. Logos is a term that means REASON.

What should be our reason for living?

Parties?

Relationships?

The best answer would be: JESUS.

If we truly understand why Jesus died for us and genuinely accepted Him, we would realize that He is the reason for living. His ways are our ways. We would do what we can to please Him. Jesus died so that you may have life in this world and He would want you to live your life wisely and according to His purpose.

When we don't understand the LOGOS, we complain. Why do we have to undergo so many testings and all that? Eventually, we'd give up and resort to making weird reasons for our own.

Remember your creator in the days of your youth...

Remember the One who made you and you shall be reminded of why you're here.

We are created by God and FOR God. We should live our life according to what He wants through His Word. This would be impossible if you don't know the LOGOS. For you to find out your purpose in life, KNOW THE LOGOS!

Evaluate yourself. Why do you live? Are you like Zod who thinks what he's doing is right but is actually wrong because he has a wrong reason for living? Or are you seeking the LOGOS to find out? Or have you been assured that Jesus is the reason why we live?

Know the logos. Know your purpose.

The Hero. The Villain. The Girl. : Find Your Identity in God

The Hero. The Villain. The Girl. 1

Find Your Identity in God (The Hero)
by Daniel Carandang

No one wants to be left out.

Let's face it. Everyone wants to belong somewhere. We want to be identified within a group that's cool and belongs within the IN society. We want to be accepted. We don't want to be that lonely looking kid who's mocked and ignored by the majority.

Kal-El was one such kid.

Before he was the well-adored Superman, he was just some homely kid misunderstood by others.

His gifts were not accepted in the world he was forced to live in. His mind-reading capabilities caused his classmates to taunt him as a weirdo. His super strength left an impression on the parents of the student body that he wasn't normal. Even the bullies of the class mocked him for what he could do.

Sometimes, we feel just like him. We think that we always have to prove ourselves to everyone for them to accept who we are. We have this need to belong, this hunger to possess an identity. We want to be valued and to be loved. There are a number of peer groups that we'd like to take part in. Varsities hold the athlete status that would most likely boost our egos in the school. When one joins a fraternity, we want to be identified as tough and we're after that need for security. Organizations provide the need to be respected and belonging.

Where do you get YOUR identity?

Who is defining YOU?

There's nothing wrong with joining organizations and varsities but when what they are is what defines you, you are willing to do anything that will keep you within their reach, to avoid anything that will disassociate you from them. Any compromise, just to let you stay.

You allow yourself to be hazed. You submit to vices just to belong within the group.

Guys and girls, if we don't have a right understanding of our identity, we will most likely end up with the wrong choices and painful consequences. Sometimes, these consequences are not only directed towards us but also to those we love who loves us. Our understanding of our identity causes an impact in the way we live.

We only have 2 choices for our source of identity:

God

or

The World

We have to choose. Do we listen to who the world thinks we are? Or to who God says we are?

God is our maker. Since He is the one who crafted us with His own hands, it's obvious that He knows us better than anyone. It is in Him where we should find who we are.

Let's imagine for a sec that you have a new Mac Pro. In order for you to figure out how everything works and what the device is for, you need to find the instruction manual provided by the maker. The Bible is our life manual. It contains knowledge on who we are and what we're really made for.

One great sample with regards to our identity is Psalm 139.

This Psalm was written by King David of Israel. It contains praises that celebrates God's omnipresence and omniscience. It also contains the truth, what we need to know about ourselves.

I. You are God's masterpiece

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in the secret place,
When I was woven together from the depths of the earth
Psalm 139:14,15

According to the world's standards, good-looking people should possess fit and sexy bodies, long shiny hairs, 10 pack abs (or even more), and long eyelashes.

But for God, who you already are is more than beautiful in His eyes. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. You are His masterpiece. When we say fearfully, that means to cause astonishment and awe. Wonderfully- to be distinct, set apart....distinguished. God's works are wonderful- difficult to understand. God did not miss a thing when we were created that is why He knows every little detail.

10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Ephesians 2:10

The Mona Lisa is DaVinci's greatest masterpiece. It's so precious that the artwork causes millions of dollars. If you don't understand it's worth, you are most likely to use the Mona Lisa as your vegetable chopping board. Same applies to us. If we don't understand our worth or choose to believe the world's opinion, we will just waste our lives.

Girls, you should know that you are worth preserving. If the world tells you that you should flaunt more of it just to be beautiful, don't listen to it. You are worth waiting for so don't just give yourself to anyone at any time.

II. You were never an accident.

Your eyes saw my unformed body;
All the days ordained for me were written in Your book
before one of them came to be
Psalm 139:16

The world says that if you're not a rich, super handsome young man or a sexy model/actress, you're just another face in the crowd.

Not with God.

You were never an accident. You were born because you have a purpose.

Take Nick Vuijicic for example. He was born with no arms nor limbs. From the looks of it, he was going to grow up doing nothing but being depressed. But he proved us wrong. He showed us that God does have a purpose for people like him. Now, he's serving as a testimony for thousands who are just like him.

You're not just another face in the crowd nor a waste of space. For God, you have a special purpose in this life.

III. You are deeply loved.

How precious to me are Your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them!
Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand
when I awake, I am still with You.
  Psalm 139:17, 18

To the world, you're just a nobody if you don't prove yourself. You don't matter cause you're just you.

However, God thinks otherwise.

You matter to Him. God's thoughts about you are precious and endless in number. He loves you because He made you but the sad fact is, we allow ourselves to be blinded by the world to realize that there is Someone out there who knows our worth.

You're special in His eyes.

In order to prevent yourself from being blinded by the world's lies, cultivate your relationship with God. Love Him back because He deserves it! He loved us when we were so unlovable. Be secure in His love for you. He allows things to happen to you because He wants you become stronger, more SUPER in this life, as you shine for Him.

Just like Kal-El, you might be feeling worthless today but just you wait-

For God intended you for something...SUPER.
